Meet the team: Salim Khan – Data Solutions Lead

In this edition of 'Meet the team', we speak to Salim Khan, a Data Solutions Lead who has been part of Ardent's momentous journey for over eight years. Salim is a brilliant Data Engineer, an exceptional leader and a real asset to the Ardent team.

Tell us about what you do at Ardent

As a Data Solutions Lead my primary responsibility is to design, develop, and maintain the organization's data infrastructure. I work closely with cross-functional teams, including client data scientists, software engineers, and business managers to ensure that data systems are meeting the client’s requirements.

Some of the specific tasks that I perform in my role include:

• Architecture Design: I contribute to designing the overall data architecture of the client, which involves choosing the appropriate database technologies, ETL processes, and data storage solutions.
• Data Integration: I work with various sources of data from different systems and integrate them into a centralised data repository. This may involve building custom ETL pipelines or using pre-built tools like Apache Kafka, Airflow or AWS Glue, and other tech stacks such as AWS and Azure.
• Data Quality and Governance: I ensure that the data being used by the clients is accurate, complete, and conforms to applicable standards and regulations. I recommend and contribute by enforcing policies around data quality, security, and access control.
• Performance Optimisation: I also contribute to optimising the performance of the data systems by tuning database configurations, improving query performance, and optimising data workflows.
• Team Management: I also lead a team of data engineers and oversee their work, providing guidance, mentoring, and feedback to ensure that they are meeting their goals and growing in their roles.

Overall, my role as a Lead Data Engineer is critical to ensuring that our client's data infrastructure is robust, reliable, and scalable to meet their current and future needs.

What does your typical day look like?

As a Data Solutions Lead, a typical day at work can vary depending on the specific needs of the client and the stage of the project. However, some common tasks and activities that I may perform on a typical day include:

• Planning and Coordination: I start my day by reviewing my calendar and prioritizing my tasks for the day. I may also attend meetings with other stakeholders, such as data scientists, client managers, or technical account managers to discuss the progress of ongoing projects or to plan for future initiatives.
• Technical Analysis: Depending on the stage of the project, I may spend time analysing data, designing data solutions, or writing code. For example, I may work on building data pipelines, creating data models, or developing machine learning models.
• Team Management: I oversee a team of data engineers, so I spend time providing guidance and feedback to team members, tracking project progress, and ensuring that everyone is aligned with the project goals.
• Communication and collaboration: A large part of my role involves communicating with various stakeholders, including technical and non-technical teams. I may spend time preparing and delivering reports, providing updates to senior management, or collaborating with other departments to identify data-related opportunities.
• Continuous learning: As data solutions lead, I stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of data science and engineering. I may spend time reading research papers, attending conferences, or taking courses to keep my skills and knowledge up to date.

Overall, a typical day involves a mix of technical work, team management, and communication and collaboration with stakeholders. The key thing for me is to stay organised, prioritise tasks effectively, and remain flexible to adapt to changing project needs.

How have you found your journey with Ardent so far?

Working with Ardent for more than eight years has been an exciting and challenging journey. Over this period, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in various aspects of data management, data engineering, and analytics. During this time, I have worked on numerous data projects, and through these experiences, have developed a deeper understanding of data workflows, database technologies, and the overall data ecosystem.

I also have gained strong leadership skills, and experience in project management, and honed my ability to communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders. Additionally, I have developed a network of professional contacts in the data industry, by participating in conferences and workshops. This also has contributed to staying updated on the latest trends and technologies.

Overall, my journey at Ardent to date has been rewarding, with opportunities to learn and grow, work on exciting projects, and make a positive impact on the Ardent data team. Ardent has helped me to keep an open mind, stay curious, and continuously seek out opportunities to learn and develop new skills to stay ahead of the ever-evolving data landscape.

What do you most value about the Ardent culture?

I value the sense of community, collaboration, and mutual respect that exists within my organization. I feel that these values create an environment in which everyone is respected and can thrive.

What’s something you are most proud of achieving since you have been at Ardent?

I am most proud of leading the successful implementation of a comprehensive data solutions strategy for Social Data that has enabled our client to maximize the value of the data. This strategy has allowed us to increase the accuracy and speed of data collection, in addition to huge cost savings. Additionally, my leadership has enabled us to leverage the social data ingest to drive meaningful insights and achieve faster analysis.

What are you most looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to helping my team develop and implement innovative solutions to challenging data problems. I'm also excited to collaborate with other teams to create data-driven initiatives that can improve overall business operations.

What led you to a career in Tech?

I have always been passionate about data and technology and wanted to combine my knowledge and skills to make an impact in the data solutions industry. Throughout my career, I have gained experience in data analysis, data engineering, data modelling, and data architecture, as well as project management and leadership. My experience in these areas has enabled me to understand the importance of data-driven decisions and become a trusted advisor in the data solutions space. I believe my technical capabilities and problem-solving skills make me an ideal candidate for the data solutions lead position.

How did you find your way to Ardent?

After completing my engineering, I was working on Progress 4GL ERP, Ardent provided me with the opportunity to learn Python, AWS, and other Data Engineering tools and platforms. I have completed multiple certifications and training in the field of Data Engineering.

Who are you when you’re not at Ardent?

When I'm not working, I'm a passionate foodie and a traveller. I enjoy exploring new cultures and cuisines and spending quality time with my family. Whenever I have the chance, I like to go on trips with my wife and daughter and make wonderful memories.
